Rare Bill Hill Comic from Richmond Zine
Another A+ entry from the Copenhaver Collection, here's a rare Bill Hill comic from a Richmond zine. Chuck, like all of us, loved Bill's comedic genius.
I remember walking down to the Barker house one afternoon and Chuck and (Trey? or was it Lewis?) were seated on the front porch. Both were in high spirits and couldn't wait to announce the latest finding: all human mood is reducible to three states, which happen to rhyme. Glad, Mad or Sad.Later, on the very same front porch, Chuck and Trey discovered that if they removed the first letter of each of their names, rather than some nonsensical phonemes, they would still have names: Huck and Rey (okay, Rey would really need to be spelled "Ray," but still).
Aren't You Glad I Stole This Photo?
I have no idea who took the shoe-on-fire photo, but at some later point I deliberately stole it with the aim of preservation. I knew it was comedy gold and that the rest of you would lose it. In the photo, he's definitely on the sofa in the Beale apartment. I think this one was off of Franklin Road in Roanoke. Who was present during this legendary photo shoot? I'm not sure, but certainly one or both Beale brothers, Bill, and I was there, too.

The Raticals 7"
Chuck did indeed enjoy Roanoke's own rockers, The Raticals. Three guys in an alley. Rare punk rock now.
Geoff Callahan, PI is an ancient pseudonym for Scott Brookman. Used since high school, for the dirty work Scott doesn't want to do. Pranks, letters to the editor, etc.
Scott is, of course, an indie pop songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and singer, with a worldwide following, almost big enough to consider him a cult figure.
